Director: Humphrey Jennings (It’s a documentary featuring real-life firefighters, so no established “names”).
A true story of London firefighters during the Blitz of 1940-41
Also known as “I Was A Fireman”, this is a classic wartime release from arguably the greatest British documentary maker of all time, Humphrey Jennings. The film tells the story of a new recruit to the London Auxiliary Fire Service, from his training and leisure time with his fellow firefighters and culminates in his first mission to save an explosives warehouse in London’s Docklands.
Before the screening
We will have a talk on the Auxiliary Fire Service from military historian and battlefield guide, Clive Harris and will also have a small group of AFS re-enactors on site, together with a wartime fire appliance. (alas re-enactors are unable to attend).
